A New Vision of Liberal Education: The Good of the Unexamined Life

Alistair Miller’s book, A New Vision of Liberal Education, is a dilation of his doctoral thesis, but it is enormously ambitious in aim: “My specific aim in this book is to explore whether aspects of the two traditions [of Enlightenment and Aristotelian ethics] might be synthesised in the concrete form of a liberal-humanist education” (NVLE, 11). Indeed, the arc of Miller’s argument ranges from these contrasting traditions of moral philosophy, through alternate versions of liberal education, to a proposal for curricular content. The book is well researched and proceeds dialectically, as Miller sifts through scholarship on liberal education, moral education, and curricula, oscillating between exploratory analysis and prescription. With an abundance of arguments, Miller’s “new vision” emerges from a series of intellectual hybridizations. The overarching motivation for Miller, however, is to describe an educational vision that is “liberal” and yet embraces the goodness of ordinary experience — “the unexamined life” — and thereby to reject the presump- tion that human flourishing requires a philosophical or intellectual life. Whether his hybrid vision is conceptually stable; whether and how his vision is “new”; whether the exploration succeeds in its ambitions — all issues I will discuss — Miller advances a serious and provocative set of proposals for educational theory and practice. Pemanfaatan Data HDSS Sleman Untuk Evaluasi Pelayanan Hipertensi dan Diabetes Melitus Di Rumah Sakit

Data HDSS Sleman merupakan salah satu data ekternal yang dapat digunakan untuk mengevaluasi mutu pelayanan di rumah sakit. Pemanfaatannya dibeberapa negara dapat dikatakan sangat besar pengaruhnya dalam pembuatan kebijakan kesehatan. Kelebihan data HDSS dibandingkan data ekternal lainnya terletak pada data yang bersifat longitudinal dan memberikan data yang valid dari waktu ke waktu. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui potensi pemanfaatan data HDSS Sleman untuk evaluasi pelayanan hipertensi dan diabetes mellitus di rumah sakit. Metode yang dipakai adalah mixed-method dengan desain explanatory. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan wilayah tempat tinggal merupakan faktor yang berhubungan dengan mutu pelayanan di RS pemerintah (p=0,000) dan swasta (p=0,002). Umur responden merupakan faktor yang berhubungan dengan mutu pelayanan di RS swasta (p=0,035) dan frekuensi rawat jalan (p=0,003). Selain itu, kepemilikan asuransi (p=0,020) juga menjadi faktor yang berhubungan dengan frekuensi rawat jalan di RS. Pada lama rawat inap di RS tidak ditemukan faktor demografi yang berhubungan. Lama rawat inap (p=0,000) dan frekuensi rawat jalan (p=0,000) di RS adalah faktor yang berhubungan dengan output perawatan responden. Data HDSS Sleman dapat memberikan informasi perbandingan pelayanan antara RS pemerintah dan swasta, akses pelayanan baik rawat jalan maupun rawat inap dan juga dampak dari pelayanan yang telah diberikan kepada pasien. Upaya memperkenalkan HDSS Sleman dinilai masih kurang dan pengembangan selanjutnya diharapkan sesuai dengan kebutuhan pengguna data. Potensi besar dalam pemanfaatan data HDSS Sleman tidak hanya dapat digunakan untuk mengevaluasi mutu pelayanan di RS, namun juga kesempatan memberikan informasi yang dibutuhkan bagi pemerintah dalam kebijakan kesehatan seperti yang dicontohkan beberapa negara. Sleman HDSS data is one of the external data that can be used to evaluate the quality of service in the hospital. Its use in several countries can be said to have a very big influence on health policymaking. The advantages of HDSS data compared to other external data lies in data that is longitudinal and provides valid data from time to time. This study aims to determine the potential use of Sleman HDSS data to evaluate hypertension and diabetes mellitus services in hospitals. The research used a mixed-method with an explanatory design. The results showed that the area of residence is a factor associated with the quality of service in government (p = 0.000) and private (p = 0.002) hospitals. Respondent's age was a factor associated with service quality in private hospitals (p = 0.035) and frequency of outpatient care (p = 0.003). Besides, insurance ownership (p = 0.020) is also a factor associated with the frequency of outpatient care in hospitals. There were no associated demographic factors in the length of stay in the hospital. Length of stay (p = 0,000) and frequency of outpatient care (p = 0,000) at the hospital are factors associated to the respondent's care output. Sleman HDSS data can provide information on the comparison of services between public and private hospitals, access to services both outpatient and inpatient, and also the impact of services provided to patients. Efforts to introduce the Sleman HDSS are considered insufficient and further development is expected following the needs of data users. The great potential in utilizing the Sleman HDSS data can not only be used to evaluate the quality of services in hospitals, but also the opportunity to provide the information needed for the government in health policies, as exemplified by several countries
